  • Graduates of the UFV TESL certificate program are eligible to apply for TESL Canada Professional Standard Two certification.
  • A practicum gives you an opportunity to practice your teaching skills in a supportive environment
  • Learn to teach English to non-native speakers and earn TESL Canada Professional Standard Two certification.

    You can complete the Teaching English as a Second Language program in less than a year. All courses are offered online with four face-to-face sessions per semester, scheduled in the early evenings and Saturdays. Distance students can participate by using video conferencing.

    Learn the latest techniques from experienced faculty and get valuable teaching practice both in class and during a supervised practicum.

    You can take UFV’s TESL certificate program either after or while you complete a bachelor’s degree program.

  • TESL grads can take advantage of exciting teaching opportunities both at home and abroad.

    In British Columbia, there is a demand for ESL teachers to help new immigrants learn English. According to , more than 40,000 immigrants arrive in BC each year, many of them in the larger urban centres of the province.  In addition, more than 150,000 foreign students come to B.C. each year, many to study English.

    ESL teachers find jobs in private and public schools, including colleges, high schools, and elementary schools. Employment opportunities also exist in community and friendship centres that welcome immigrants.

    Teaching English as a Second Language can also open doors to teaching abroad, with a variety of opportunities available in Asia, Europe, and South America.

Entry Requirement


  • Applicants must have completed either a bachelor’s degree or 60 credits at UFV or equivalent at a recognized post-secondary institution with a cumulative GPA of 2.67 or higher
  • Applicant must be high school passed.

Application Process


  • nternational students are advised to apply as early as possible for a better selection of the program. The university invites students from all over the world to experience quality education at the University of the Fraser Valley. Note that the application portal for international students is different from that for domestic students.

    Application Fee: Undergraduate: 150 CAD, Graduate: 250 CAD

    Basic Admission Requirements: The following documents must be submitted along with the application for admission:

  • Official high school or post-secondary transcripts depending on the program you are applying for.
  • Valid Passport
  • English language proficiency test scores of tests like TOEFL, IELTS, etc.
  • International students may need their transcripts to be evaluated before submitting them to the institute.
  • Students applying from India still in high school can submit a copy of transcripts from Grade 11.
  • Course-specific requirements for graduate programs like work experience, personal statement, letters of recommendation, writing sample, etc.
  • English Proficiency Test Score for International Students

    All international applicants who do not have English as their primary language of instruction will need to provide scores of English proficiency tests like TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, etc. Scores vary depending on the type of program you are applying for. Thus, students are requested to check the minimum scores required depending on their program type. The following table demonstrates the minimum scores required for degree and diploma level graduate and undergraduate programs.

  • Students are required to meet the  required of all undergraduate students at the University of the Fraser Valley.
  • For certification, students who apply to the TESL certificate program with a degree in a language other than English are required to meet one of the following requirements (as per TESL Canada requirement for students with a degree from a non-English speaking institution):
    • IELTS Academic 7, TOEFL 101, English 12 with 70% from a Canadian school
    • Permission of the department
