  • Brief description

The Bachelor's degree in Mathematics in Marburg is based on a clearly defined study program. The aim is to impart a broad theoretical basis of mathematical knowledge in connection with the study of a freely selectable minor. First of all, the basic concepts and ideas are conveyed and practiced in order to gradually advance to more complex and abstract contexts. The beginners' lecture “Fundamentals of Mathematics” makes it easier for you to get started with university mathematics and introduces you as a freshman to topics that are important in all areas of mathematics (e.g. proof techniques, propositional theory and set theory).
Special courses as well as an internship give you the opportunity to acquire interdisciplinary and personal key skills. Practical relevance and topicality are combined with a scientifically based education, whereby mainly mathematical and natural science and less engineering methods are used.

    Focus

Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Optimization, Stochastics, Numerics, Discrete Mathematics

    aims

The fields of activity for mathematicians are very diverse and predominantly interdisciplinary. Since the fields of activity in which a solid knowledge of mathematics are required are continuously developing, there are excellent career prospects. Interesting, non-subject tasks are often carried out very successfully, as abstract-logical skills to analyze a problem and lead to a solution are also of great use in other areas and this particularly encourages innovation processes.
Graduates can be found outside of universities and research institutions in practically all areas of industry and business. Mathematicians are particularly sought after in software development, in banks and insurance companies, but also in the automotive industry. The ability to trace problems back to their fundamental core also makes them particularly suitable for innovative professional fields such as cell and genetic research or IT security.
