  • Physics (M.Sc.)

    Brief description

The master’s degree is the actual completion of the physics degree. The very short 2-semester master’s degree requires an 8-semester bachelor’s degree in physics. The theoretical, experimental and practical requirements for graduation have been laid in the bachelor's degree. The master’s course is very research-oriented. The preparation and implementation of the master's thesis is the central component of the course. A small number of opportunities are given to participate in course events.

The master's thesis is an independent scientific research work that requires planning, commitment, teamwork and a certain tolerance in dealing with obstacles and unexpected problems from the candidates. The research activity takes place mainly in working groups (AG) in the department. An orientation phase serves to get to know these working groups. However, there is also the opportunity to do research in research groups outside and possibly in companies, clearly in coordination with the department.

    Focus

The candidates are free to choose their field of work, depending on the possibilities. Typically, a working group is found independently and a topic is selected in consultation with the supervisor. You can choose from a wide range:

  • Research activities in the department (astro-, bio- and neurophysics, experimental and theoretical semiconductor physics, physics of complex systems, molecular solids, surface physics, structure and technology research, many-particle physics)
  • Research associations and institutions (Scientific Center for Materials Science, Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1083 Structure and Dynamics of Inner Interfaces, SFB / TRR 135 Cardiac Mechanisms of Perception, Graduate Schools Functionalization of Semiconductors and The Brain in Action, LOEWE Center Synmikro, research groups and focus and joint projects .
  • aims

The master’s degree in physics prepares students for independent and responsible work as a physicist in business, industry, in scientific research institutes and in public administration, as well as for further doctoral studies.

Experience has shown that the possible professional fields of a physicist are very broad and often extend far into neighboring scientific and other disciplines.

Entry Requirement

  • Applicant must have a bachelor degree.
  • Applicant must have completed a bachelor's degree in another mathematics and natural sciences subject with physics and passed the aptitude test procedure of the department physics
